Maintenance Matters: Your Brakes' Best Friend - The Flush

A brake flush is a crucial maintenance procedure that involves completely replacing the old brake fluid in your vehicle's braking system with fresh, clean fluid. Here's a breakdown of what it is and why it's important:

What is a Brake Flush?

  • Fluid Replacement: It's the process of removing all the existing brake fluid from the brake lines, master cylinder, and other components, and at the same time, refilling the system with new brake fluid.
  • Contamination Removal: Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air which reduces the fluids effectiveness. It also can collect debris from the brake system itself contaminating the fluid which can damage seals found throughout and adding the need for costly component replacement.

Why is it Important?

  • Maintains Braking Performance: Contaminated brake fluid has a lower boiling point, which can cause brake fade (reduced braking power) under heavy use. Fresh fluid ensures consistent and reliable braking.
  • Prevents Corrosion: Moisture in brake fluid can corrode the internal components of the braking system, leading to costly repairs. A flush helps prevent this.
  • Ensures Safety: Effective brakes are essential for safe driving. A brake flush helps maintain the optimal performance of your braking system, reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Extends Component Life: By removing contaminated fluid, you are helping to extend the life of the brake system components.

Signs that you’re overdue for a brake flush?

  • The brake pedal feels soft, spongy, or loose
  • The ABS dashboard light is on
  • Braking performance is less effective
  • You hear strange noises or smells when braking

How often to flush your brake fluid?

Brake fluid flushes are recommended every 4 years or 60k miles, whichever comes first.

In essence, a brake flush is a vital maintenance task that helps keep your brakes working properly and ensures your safety on the road.
